About Richard Bailey

Richard H. Bailey has studied art & sculpture his whole life. His wife is an artist. His mother was an artist. His work comes from the heart and his passion is apparent in every work he has created. He has traveled the world to study his art and is well known by other well respected artist. His work graces many museums, church's and homes. He has been an internationally listed artist since 1972 and has been featured in "Who's Who of American Art". While he does consider commissioned work, he is constantly producing new and exciting pieces and currently has an inventory that he has created from the heart. 1960s

• Received a Ford Foundation Scholarship from the Art Student’s League of New York City.

• 1967 – First major purchase made by St. Polycarp’s Church in Smyrna, Delaware.

1970s

• Awarded the Purchase Prize from the University of Delaware.

1971 & 1975

• Won the Founders’ Award at the Rehoboth Art League, Rehoboth, Delaware.

1972 & 1973

• Received the Silvermine Guild Award for Sculpture.

Date Unknown

• The American Museum of Natural History in New York City acquired one of his works.

• His sculptures are held in private collections, galleries, and museums worldwide.

Present Day

• The artist’s studio is located in Smyrna, Delaware, where Richard H. Bailey continues to express his spirit through original forms inspired by the 20th-century world around him.

Education & Training

Richard H. Bailey’s artistic journey is rooted in decades of dedicated study under renowned artists and institutions across the U.S. and Europe.

He began his formal training at the Delaware Art Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

He continued at the prestigious Art Students League of New York, followed by studies at The New School for Social Research in NYC, where he served as class monitor for sculptor Lorrie Goulet.

In Carrara, Italy, Bailey immersed himself in the traditional art of marble sculpting, learning every phase of the process from extraction to fine finishing.

He mastered granite sculpting through a program sponsored by the Barre Granite Association and the Manpower Development Training Act, receiving hands-on training in cutting and polishing at Barre, Vermont.

At Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, he focused on drawing to refine his foundational artistic skills.

For three years, Bailey studied lapidary techniques—cutting and polishing jade, jasper, agate, and other stones—under the mentorship of legendary sculptors José de Creeft and Lorrie Goulet, working with them in both New York City and Hoosick Falls, New York.
